Ruby Sky is a nice spot. I've been there a long time ago for a Tribe Reunion and when then again for someones bday. A huge space & great sound system. I was surprised by a couple of things at this show. 1. I thought this Goodie Mob show was gonna bring out the faithfuls, the space wasn't even packed. I'm not sure if it was because it was held on a Sunday or that they didn't promote it well enough. 2. I was surprised at the different type of crowd it was. Nowadays a certain type of group or groups of people show up to a hip hop show...and at this show it wasn't the case. Not a big deal though, I was just being observant.
The Jacka opened up for Goodie Mob. I am not familiar with his music, so I basically was a spectator in the crowd looking for something to catch my ear...unfortunately nothing did. I mean he had some beats, but his flow and lyrics just didn't have that essence, or originality. A lot of his songs sounded the same to me. The one song that I was familiar with was that song they play on the radio "All Over Me" I do find myself movin and groovin' to that song. I will say that him and his entourage did have the stage presence...they definitely worked the stage.
The Goodie Mob reunion was great! They came on stage with major energy. They each came out on stage one at a time...and then started off the show with "Goodie Bag" their chick dj mixed in a couple of familiar songs in the middle of Goodie Bag, which put a different twist to that song. Some songs they did were " Soul Food" "Black Ice" "Beautiful Skin", The crowd sang a long to "Free" Cee-Lo even did some Gnarls Barkely songs like "Crazy" and "Closet Freak". They threw in "Thought Process" and "Get Rich to This" It was great to see Goodie Mob fans singing along to the lyrics, and knowing that these Goodie Mob songs took them back. Back when hip hop was fresh to death. On a side note, Nate and I thought that they should done their show at a smaller venue, it would have been much more intimate and appropriate for the number of people who showed up. In my opinion, it would have resulted in a more hyped show.
They surprised us with a tribute to bay area music. Their dj played a number of bay are artist joints and got a huge crowd appreciation for that! They closed out with "Cell Therapy" one of my favorites...and last song was "They Don't Dance No Mo" A perfect song to end with. Goodie Mob had much appreciation...the bay area was their last stop on their tour. Nate and I even managed to get a hand shake from T-MO!
I'm gonna put it out there and say that the last time I saw Goodie Mob it was a way better show, but that was over 10 years ago and they were in their prime!! Overall it was great to see them back on stage together again after all these years. Sad that The Hopes left early but always great to see them. Again another fun night in the city... & another great show to add to my list.
